THE PERSON BEHIND THE PRACTICE

A life devoted to
understanding.

Before she studied human behavior,
she learned to listen to what it was saying.

Meet Dr. Suzy Lea Juarez—educational psychologist, behavioral specialist, researcher, and founder of HOPE ABA. Her work brings more than 25 years of experience together with a deeply personal belief: human beings grow through connection.

01 / HER STORY

The beginnings of
a different way
of seeing.

A personal journey that became a lifelong commitment to understanding others.

EARLY LIFE

Learning to read the room.

Dr. Juarez’s interest in people began long before her formal education. Growing up with instability and inconsistent caregiving, she became attentive to other people’s emotions, moods, and behavior at a young age. She learned how much safety, communication, and emotional connection matter to a developing child.

Leaving home as a teenager brought early lessons in independence, uncertainty, and responsibility. Those experiences would later inform the questions she brought to her work: What is this person communicating? Do they feel safe? Do they feel understood?

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Turning observation into expertise.

Dr. Suzy Lea Juarez has a PhD in Psychology with a concentration in Educational Psychology. Her doctoral education gave her a foundation for examining those questions through research and practice. For more than 25 years, she has supported individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, and complex behavioral needs.

Her experience spans direct intervention, assessments, behavioral consultation, parent and staff education, community-based support, research, and program development. Working alongside individuals, families, and interdisciplinary teams has kept her attention on how ideas translate into everyday life.

A PHILOSOPHY TAKES SHAPE

Seeing the person within the behavior.

Her work integrates behavioral science with developmental psychology, functional communication, emotional awareness, and family systems. She looks at what happens before a behavior, what a person understands, and how much time they need to respond.

That perspective informs HOPE ABA and her continued work as an educator, researcher, mother, author, and advocate. A person’s diagnosis or most difficult moment can never tell their whole story.

THE BELIEF THAT CONNECTS IT ALL

“Human beings grow
through connection.”

02 / HER WORK

Understanding becomes
everyday possibility.

Her practice focuses on the skills, relationships, and self-determination that help people participate meaningfully in their own lives.

01

Independence,
one skill at a time.

Adaptive Skills Training connects learning to daily life: getting dressed, communicating a need, making a decision, or participating in the community. Dr. Juarez starts with existing strengths and emerging abilities, then supports the next step toward independence.

By gradually reducing unnecessary reminders and assistance, she creates opportunities for individuals to practice, solve problems, and build confidence.

02

Space to process.
Time to respond.

Individual Processing Time (IPT) is a concept she develops and explores in her work. It recognizes that a person may need more time to understand a question, organize their thoughts, regulate themselves, and respond.

Her attention to micro-behaviors—a glance, a pause, a reach, an attempt at a word—invites families and professionals to notice emerging communication and participation.

03

Support that
affirms the person.

Dr. Juarez emphasizes effort, emotional awareness, communication, and attempts toward independence throughout the learning process. Her approach gives individuals a voice in decisions and recognizes their effort as they learn.

The aim is to help individuals develop autonomy, relationships, and a positive sense of identity, with practical support for families, caregivers, and educators.

03 / HER WRITING

Making room for
loss, identity,
and becoming.

Her personal history and professional work continue to shape the questions she explores as an author.

ORIGINAL FRAMEWORK · IN DEVELOPMENT

Living Loss Theory

Dr. Juarez’s original framework explores grief and adaptation when a person or relationship remains present, while expectations, roles, identities, or imagined futures change. It asks how people can acknowledge loss while moving toward connection, self-compassion, and meaningful growth.

FORTHCOMING WRITING

The Living Loss series

An exploration of ongoing loss, changing expectations, and the possibility of building a meaningful life through understanding and adaptation.

FORTHCOMING WRITING

A Love Letter to Autism

Writing grounded in her belief that autistic people deserve opportunities for self-understanding, independence, mutual connection, community participation, and a positive sense of who they are.
